Má profesorský titul, vede oddělení v pařížské nemocnici, váží si jí nejen jako lékařky, ale i jako člověka. V románu sledujeme několik všedních dnů bohatého života dr. Gaillantové, poznamenaných odlivem fyzické i duševní energie. Ztrácí chuť rázně řešit každodenní spory v nemocnici, pozbývá síly zápasit po boku pacientů o jejich uzdravení. Definitivně si uvědomuje, že jako manželka a matka je neúspěšná. Práce u ní od začátku měla přednost před dětmi a teď když syn i dcera dospívají, nedokáže jim překonat nesnadný vstup do světa dospělých. Nad hromadícími se problémy vítězí únava, která při kontrolním snímkování plic dostane konkrétní jméno. Doktorka Gaillantová je těžce nemocná: rakovina. Svým pacientům nikdy neříkala krutou pravdu, je přesvědčena, že s takovou pravdou není nikdo schopen se vyrovnat. Inteligentní, emancipované a přímé ženě-lékařce však nikdo z kolegů neposkytne milosrdnou lež, naději, které by se mohla zachytit. Až do konce románu, kdy se dr. Gaillantová chystá na operační sál, sledujeme její bolestný a heroický zápas, kdy sama v sobě a proti všem hledá a nachází vůli k životu.
