Geta Bratescu (b. Ploie?ti, 1926; d. Bucharest, 2018) is now widely regarded as one of Eastern Europe’s most important avant-gardists. In the Western art world, however, she was largely obscure until her participation in documenta 14 in 2017 and the Biennale di Venezia of the same year. Questions of abstraction, the political potential of the image, and the subjective experience of self, memory, and history inform her stylistically diverse oeuvre in a wide range of media, which evolved under the repressive conditions of the Ceausescu regime yet kept pace with the discourses of the Western avant-gardes. This richly illustrated volume focuses on her collages and drawings as well as her works on film and video from the late 1970s until her death. With contributions by Geta Bratescu, Pernille Fonnesbech, Ion Grigorescu, Marian Ivan, Albert Kriemler, Stefan Sava, Roland Wäspe, and Lorenz Wiederkehr.

Ausstellungen: Kunstverein St. Gallen Kunstmuseum 10.12.2004-13.2.2005 · Ikon Gallery, Birmingham 9.4.-5.6.2005 · Museum Haus Lange, Krefeld 2006

Working at the interface between sculpture and painting Jessica Stockholder has, over recent years, developed a body of work of international significance. According to essayist Roland Wäspe, "A little Alice in Wonderland is the way you feel in one of Jessica Stockholder's environments." The artist uses cloth, metal grates, pastel flooring, and bright Lego blocks that colorfully translate a room into a bewitching three-dimensional painting one can walk into. This beautifully assembled catalogue documents Stockholder's works created at St. Gallen Art Museum. Extensive texts illuminate the origins of the work, and an extended interview with the artist gives insights into her thinking and achievements. Essays by Konrad Bitterli, Gerhard Mack and Roland Wäspe. Hardcover, 8.5 x 1.75 in./56 pgs / 20 color.

"The artist Giovanni Segantini was a leading member of the European avant-garde of his day. He was hailed as an 'innovator', a 'prophet' and a 'revolutionary': in an obituary one critic called him a "Secession in his own right". His work was to be seen in public and private collections alike, and had a major effect on art in Europe at the time. Even the Futurists cited him as a role-model." "This is the first ever Segantini monograph in English. It offers the public an opportunity to see important paintings and drawings by this artist, including his famous triptych La vita - La natura - La morte (Live - Nature - Death). With in-depth essays on the artist's oeuvre - from his early genre paintings, influenced by Realism, right up to his symbolic depictions of Nature in a Divisionist style - this publication is an up-to-date, comprehensive monograph on Giovanni Segantini."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc.
