For over 28 years the Wall divided the city of Berlin. The barriers erected by the GDR in August 1961 broke painfully into the lives of the people. For a long time it seemed as if the division would be there forever. Yet in 1989 the desire of the German people was fulfilled: the construction which has been built to last for ever, which had seperated familes, friends, work collegues, in fact a whole nation, in a brutal manner, crumbled to the ground. The fall of the Berlin Wall was the climax of the peaceful revolution of Autumn 1989. Thanks to the East Germans, the re-unified Germany experienced a successful revolution in freedom. However the East Germans also brought with them those years of oppression and bondage to which the pictures in this book bear witness. Little is still to be seen of the Wall in Berlin. Just as it was worthwile in the times of the divided Germany, it is still worthwhile in this town, in fact it is indisputable, that we should believe in the sancity of the value of each individual person and fight for that.
