John and Betty Stam were a young Christian couple working for The Lord in China. The year was 1934, a turbulent time in history and the Stams were right in the thick of it. Early one morning the call went out that communist soldiers were approaching their town. Betty was nursing their young baby girl when John decided that perhaps now was the time to leave … as they began to make their plans the rebel soldiers broke through the walls and soon the sound of rifle buts was being heard as they knocked against the door. Calm in the face of trouble the Stams trusted in their loving heavenly father – and with that faith faced their future whatever that would be. This is a story of tragedy as well as trust. It is heartbreaking but full of strength. It is the story of two young martyrs who believed in God and in his call on their lives. The painful story of John and Betty Stam retains a spark of hope through the power of their testimony and the life of their infant daughter who survived them.

I didn't want to get out of bed. I felt like I couldn't get out of bed. I couldn't face school. I could barely face leaving my room. Instead, I listened for hours to the same two sad songs on my stereo. Sometimes, I sat in front of the mirror and watched myself cry. Other times, I couldn't even cry. I just felt numb. 'Write about what you know,' is the advice often given to aspiring authors. Well I know about depression. I know about hurting. I know about regrets. I don't have all the answers, and I can't pretend that I do. But I want to share what I do have. Because, by God's grace, I know about depression, but I also know about things getting better. If you or someone that you care about is suffering from depression, my prayer is that this book might give you hope. I don't know what you believe about God. That's ok. There will hopefully be things in this book that you might relate to, and that might help you, regardless of what you believe. At the same time, there will also be stuff about God, and the Bible.Even if you're not too sure what you think about that, I'd encourage you to give those parts of the book a chance. You might find that God understands your depression better than you realise. You might even find, as I did eventually, that He is the best source of help there is. I waited patiently for the Lord;he turned to me and heard my cry.He lifted me out of the slimy pit,out of the mud and mire.(Psalm 40:1)

Two young people, one faith and a shared passion for the truth of God’s Word – that was the beginning of the story of Francis and Edith Schaeffer. Together, they wanted to follow wherever God would lead them and to share the Good News about Jesus with whoever God would send them. But little did they imagine that God would lead them to a remote village in the mountains of Switzerland. Nor did they foresee how God would use their ministry in that little mountain chalet to impact people all over the world. Francis and Edith Schaeffer opened their home to anyone searching for truth. They spent their whole lives helping people to see that the Bible’s answers to life’s questions are relevant and true; in their time, and for all time.
