Monografie představuje jednu z nejzajímavějších osobností rudolfínské Prahy, Davida ben Šlomo Ganse (1541 Lippstadt, Vestfálsko - 1613 Praha), který náležel k okruhu učenců pražského Židovského Města. Jeho nejdůležitějším dílem je kronika Semah David (Ratolest Davidova, Praha 1592). V prostředí střední a východní Evropy byl Gans prvním židovským historikem s profesionálním přístupem ke zpracovávané látce, s prameny pracoval v duchu humanistické historické metodologie. Přes zachování středověké analistické formy tak vytvořil první dílo tohoto typu v židovské literatuře střední Evropy.
