This historical novel portrays the story of Sean Dempsey, a man who went through the turmoil on the front line of Passchendaele as a tunneller. On his return to his native Ireland, he becomes embroiled in the fighting of the Easter Rising of 1916. After the Irish civil war and working for Irish Intelligence, he is given a pardon on condition he does work for British Intelligence. This career of spying primarily in Germany and France lands him with enemies of his former Irish comrades and with the British. Leaving the Secret Service in ruins, Sean is retired with a new identity to Derry but this reality of living out his days away from action only lasts a decade or so when, in 1934, he is drafted once again into a spying mission into the Third Reich, but does it turn to betrayal?
