      Gordon Matthew Sumner, Sohn eines Milchmanns, arbeitete als Bauarbeiter und wurde Lehrer. Er schildert, wie er in Paris in einem schäbigen Hotel an Cyrano de Bergerac denkend »Roxanne« schrieb, und warum er den Song immer noch mag.
