After Jack Letts went to Syria as an idealistic 18-year-old, his parents faced a savaging from the tabloid press. They sent him a small amount of money to try to help him leave and were arrested and convicted of supporting terrorism. Despite any evidence that Jack was a member of a terrorist group, he remains imprisoned in a Kurdish jail.

Their efforts led to the establishment of Walnut Run, which powered a gristmill and sawmill, attracting more settlers. The area underwent several name changes, reflecting its evolving community, and eventually became known as Cortland. Over the years, it developed into a thriving township with churches, businesses, and even a lake built during World War II, showcasing the hard work and dedication of its residents.
