Since its publication in 1952, Leo Strauss's Persecution and the Art of Writing has stirred considerable controversy, particularly among historians concerned with early modern philosophy. On the one hand, several scholars share his view that it would be inadequate to generally take at face value the explicit message of texts which were composed in an era in which severe sanctions were imposed on those who entertained deviating views. ‘Reading between the lines’ therefore seems to be the appropriate hermeneutical approach. On the other hand, the risks of such an interpretative maxim are more than obvious, as it might come up to an unlimited license to ascribe heterodox doctrines to early modern philosophers whose manifest teachings were in harmony with the orthodox positions of their time. The conributions to this volume both address these methodological issues and discuss paradigmatic cases of authors who might indeed be candidates for a Straussian ‘reading between the lines’: Hobbes, Spinoza, and Bayle.

This book explores the geographical spread of malaria transmission influenced by temperature, modeling the Plasmodium vivax pathogen's reproduction rate. It maps outbreak risks in Lower Saxony and Germany using geostatistics, analyzing historical and future data based on climate models and IPCC temperature projections.

Zu den philosophie- und theologiegeschichtlichen Formationen, denen in der Zeitspanne zwischen dem späten 16. und dem 18. Jahrhundert die Überwindung der vormodernen Welt die wichtigsten Impulse verdankt, gehört ohne Zweifel der Deismus. Seine Leitideen sind der Gedanke der Suffizienz einer um moralische Vorschriften zentrierten ‚natürlichen‘ Religion, die aus bloßer Vernunft zugänglich ist, die Überflüssigkeit einer übernatürlichen Offenbarung und die daraus abgeleitete Forderung nach Toleranz und Denkfreiheit. Diese Ideen weisen den Deismus geradezu als „die Religionsphilosophie der Aufklärung“ (Ernst Troeltsch) aus. Diese maßgebliche Rolle, die der Deismus im Modernisierungsprozess der frühneuzeitlichen Philosophie und der europäischen Kultur im weiteren Sinne gespielt hat, ist seit langem bekannt – und doch fehlt es an einem differenzierten Gesamtbild. In den letzten Jahrzehnten sind zum einen wichtige Forschungserträge erzielt worden, zum anderen hat die Deismus-Forschung etliche Desiderate festgestellt, denen sie teilweise bereits nachgegangen ist. Aus Anlass des 80. Geburtstags von Günter Gawlick fand deshalb im Juni 2010 ein Arbeitsgespräch zu den Gestalten des Deismus in Europa in der Herzog August Bibliothek Wolfenbüttel statt. Der zugehörige von Winfried Schröder herausgegebene Sammelband bündelt die Teilergebnisse der bisherigen Deismus-Forschung zu einer Positionsbestimmung des Deismus in der Kultur-, Ideen- und Geistesgeschichte der Frühen Neuzeit.

Lectures and results of a workshop on environmental monitoring, that took place in Munich in June, 1994, are published here in English. Organizer of the workshop was the "Harmonization of Environmental Measurement Office (HEM)" of the UN section dealing with this aspect of the protection of the environment. The volume presents the basic requirements for establishing an international network of environmental monitoring, it deals with the factors necessary for harmonizing environmental measures and setting up parameters for the comparability of data gained. Finally, it offers a concept for the establishment of such a terrestrial network. The names of the workshop participants and an index of already existing monitoring systems round off this informative volume.
