Sir Charles Lyell was a Scottish geologist who popularized the revolutionary work of James Hutton, presenting the principle of uniformitarianism to the public. His key work advanced the idea that the Earth was shaped by the same scientific processes that are still in operation today. Lyell's research included explanations of earthquakes, the theory of gradual volcano building, and the division of the Tertiary period into the Pliocene, Miocene, and Eocene epochs.
