During the Middle Ages, the sciences were divided into two parts known as the trivium and quadrivium. The trivium included grammar, rhetoric, and dialectic. The liberal arts served as an introduction to the study of theology, which was their objective and to which they were subordinated. Some authors, particularly Aquinas, divided studies in the manner of the Stoics into ethics, which corresponded to the trivium.
