Zij worden geleid door de geest van de Maanvalk die in de dromen van het oudste meisje spreekt. De avonturen die zij meemaken met luipaarden, krokodillen, een vulkaan, een aardbeving en als gevaarlijkste andere mensen, worden afgewisseld met 'oud-verhalen', de mythen van het volk van de Maanvalk. Hoofdthema is de ontwikkeling van taal, organisatie, altruïsme, godsdienst en werktuigen. Het boek is onderverdeeld in vier boeken, telkens geschreven vanuit het gezichtspunt van een ander kind. Het taalgebruik is niet eenvoudig, de technische leesbaarheid is moeilijker dan de inhoud. Het boek is geschikt voor kinderen vanaf twaalf jaar en ook te lezen door volwassenen. Er zijn mooie illustraties in grijstinten van de dieren die in de mythes voorkomen. De inhoud van het boek is niet historisch verantwoord, maar ontspruit geheel aan de fantasie van de schrijver. Het boek is in het buitenland al voorgedragen voor een aantal prijzen. Naast spannend is het echter ook enigszins pretentieus. (Biblion recensie, Fred Koekoek)

Brett Shapiro, scrittore e giornalista statunitense, incontra nel giugno del 1990 Giovanni Forti, corrispondente dell'Espresso, che vive a New York con il figlio adolescente. Nel libro, le voci di entrambi descrivono la vicenda di questa famiglia provocatoria e non tradizionale in cui si inserisce quasi subito un intruso: l'Aids. Intercalando alla narrazione alcune lettere di Giovanni, Shapiro ripercorre la loro storia con l'Aids. L'ultimo capitolo è un diario scritto da Brett durante le ultime settimane di vita di Giovanni.
