The Carandiru House of Detention, in the teeming city of São Paulo, was the largest and most crowded prison in Latin America. Known as the 'Old House', it was also highly unusual in the way it was governed. Closed to the outside world, and even largely to the wardens, it was run almost entirely by the inmates themselves, who created a unique society complete with politics, hierarchies and a system of justice. In 1989, at the height of the AIDS epidemic in Brazil, with only a handful of physicians attempting to treat an inmate population of over 7,000, the medical situation at Carandiru was dire. A city doctor, Drauzio Varella, volunteered his time at Carandiru over the course of thirteen years, in an effort to combat the rampant disease. As he gained the inmates' trust he was given access to their society, where he was overwhelmed by the profound humanity and freedom of spirit shown by these men, despite their terrible crimes and the inhuman conditions in which they lived. Lockdown is Varella's powerful depiction of life on the inside, wherein he recounts the prisoners' colourful and surprising stories. The book ends with the massacre by the police of the prisoners that ultimately brought down the 'Old House'.

O médico Drauzio Varella relata dez anos de atendimento voluntário na Casa de Detenção de São Paulo, o maior presídio do Brasil, e mostra como um código penal não-escrito organizava o comportamento da população carcerária. Em 1989, o médico Drauzio Varella iniciou na Detenção um trabalho voluntário de prevenção à AIDS. Entre os mais de 7200 presos, conheceu pessoas como Mário Cachorro, Roberto Carlos, Sem-Chance, seu Jeremias, Alfinete, Filósofo, Loreta e seu Luís. Não importava a pena a que tinham sido condenados, todos seguiam um rígido código penal não escrito, criado pela própria população carcerária. Contrariá-lo poderia equivaler à morte. O relato de Drauzio Varella neste livro tem as tonalidades da experiência pessoal: não busca denunciar um sistema prisional antiquado e desumano; expressa uma disposição para tratar com as pessoas caso a caso, mesmo em condições nada propícias à manifestação da individualidade. Lançado em 1999 e transformado em filme em 2003, por Hector Babenco, Estação Carandiru recebeu o Prêmio Jabuti 2000 de livro do ano e, desde então, já vendeu centenas de milhares de exemplares.

Autor, który przez wiele lat pracował charytatywnie w zakładach karnych jako lekarz, nie tylko barwnie i szczegółowo opisuje ten niezwykły świat, ale bada też, co sprawiło, że jego podopieczne znalazły się za kratami. Gwałty, morderstwa, kradzieże, handel narkotykami większość tych przestępstw jest popełniana z biedy, beznadziei, pragnienia poprawy swojego losu. To smutny paradoks, ale niektóre bohaterki tej opowieści dopiero za murami więzienia znajdują bezpieczną przystań.
