Alain-René Lesage

    May 6, 1668 – November 17, 1747

Alain-René Le Sage was a prolific French satirical dramatist whose work significantly influenced European literature, particularly through his classic picaresque novel. Drawing inspiration from Spanish theatre and literature, Le Sage crafted satirical plays and prose that keenly commented on Parisian society of his era. His most celebrated work, considered one of the earliest realistic novels, follows the adventures of an adaptable young protagonist navigating various masters while maintaining a sunnier spirit, ultimately finding a peaceful retirement. Le Sage is recognized as a successor to Molière for his contributions to comedy.
