Jeho hrdina, chlapec z chudých poměrů, odchází znechucen rodinnými poměry z domova, najde si místo v dolech na severu Anglie, dře i divoce užívá života achce být vždy a všude lvem, který "požírá jiné, ale sám se sežrat nedá". Nakonec jej však ovládne dívka, do níž se zamiloval.
