Amaru a Bhartrhari (zřejmě žili v 5. až 7. stol. n. l.), vedle Kálidásy nejvýznamnější staroindičtí lyrikové. Pro Amarua je typický postřeh pro hru milostných citů; jeho základními motivy jsou hněv, smutek a smíření. Bhartrhari je naproti tomu spíše reflexivní, gnómický, milostnou touhu u něho obvykle vystřídá pokání a jeho verše vyznívají nabádavě a poučně. K jejich dochovaným básním jsou připojeny verše anonymního autora v podobném duchu, jež patří k pozůstalosti Františka Hrubína.
