Beate Mueller seldom refers to her pictures as photos. The title of her first publication, 'Lichtbilder' ('Light Pictures') already hints that it is possible to approach her work from a different angle than with a media-trained eye for photography. Instead of quickly and routinely 'reading' photos for their informational content and visual appeal, Müller's images demand a more attentive and lingering gaze. They make us wonder what we are seeing, and how. In unpretentious snapshots and seemingly banal everyday surroundings, Müller uncovers the finest color nuances, modulated surface textures and outlines that look hand-drawn.
