Autor Zpěvy Maldororovy vydal vlastním nákladem roku 1869 v Bruselu, na knižní trh se však nedostaly – nakladatelé se obávali nesnází. Kromě Zpěvů se z jeho díla dochovalo jen šest dopisů a soubor esejů s názvem Poesie. Isidore Ducasse zemřel zcela opuštěn 24. listopadu 1870 za německého obléhání Paříže. Příčina jeho smrti je neznámá. V 19. století vyšlo sice ještě druhé vydání Zpěvů (1890), ale velikost tohoto díla uznali jen vzácní jedinci. Počátkem 20. století se k němu přihlásili příslušníci umělecké avantgardy a Zpěvy vyšly potřetí (1918). Teprve toto vydání znamenalo první skutečný úspěch Isidora Ducasse – dlouho po smrti osamělého tvůrce. Podivnost obrazů a styl knihy uchvátily francouzské surrealisty, kteří v Lautréamontovi spatřovali jednoho ze svých významných předchůdců. André Breton jej uvádí v pověstném surrealistickém „rodokmenu“ Prvního manifestu surrealismu. Později napsal: „Zpěvy Maldororovy skvějí se nesrovnatelným leskem; jsou vyjádřením celkového zjevení, jež jako by přesahovalo lidské možnosti.
