Abraham Gottlob Werner was a German geologist who laid the groundwork for an early theory of Earth's crust stratification and a history of the planet known as Neptunism. While many aspects of Neptunism were later superseded, Werner's legacy includes demonstrating the chronological succession of rocks and inspiring a generation of geologists. His teaching, focused on the chronological ordering of rocks, captivated students across Europe. Although he published little himself, Werner's dynamic lectures and his ability to convey the broader interrelations of geology instilled a vision in his students, which they then disseminated worldwide.
