A sensitively written and illustrated story about a young Jewish boy growing up in the horrors of World War II. "My name was Eitan and it was the summer of 1943. I was sitting onthe rooftop with my best friend Rivka and the whole world was at my feet." This is the story of Eitan, a gifted violinist, and his best friend, Rivka, growing up where children laugh, dogs bark, and women chat. All of this would be beautiful and idyllic, if not for one big, dark "but"--no one can leave this town, and once you go through the gates, you never comeback... This picture book is light in appearance only--in fact, its pages unfold a story about one of the darkest stages of human history--the Holocaust. Marcinkevicius lays out life in the ghetto in spare sentences, highlighting the complexities of the human condition: although the block is surrounded by a wall and guarded by soldiers, you can climb on the roof and dream there; although families are taken out of the ghetto one by one and do not return, it does not extinguish people's hope and culture: performances are held in the theater, voices echo in the streets, neighbors gather, children and their pets play. It is not easy to talk about topics this difficult, but Marcinkevicius and Dagile portray Eitan as he witnesses the disaster that befell the Jewish people with great sensitivity.

An einem klaren Wintertag, als der Schnee unter den Füßen knirschte, spazierte das Ferkelchen unter der strahlenden Wintersonne zum gefrorenen Flüsschen, da kam ihm die Idee: Heut ist der ideale Tag zum Schlittschuhlaufen! Das macht aber viel mehr Spaß zu zweit. So ist er bald mit seiner besten Freundin, der Kuh Adelheid auf dem Weg zum See. Plötzlich machen die beiden eine geheimnisvolle Entdeckung: Jemand unter dem Eis versucht, den beiden etwas zu sagen oder vielmehr: Zu schreiben! Gar nicht so einfach, diese verdrehte, seltsame Sprache zu entziffern – ein SLEW soll es sein, der da von der anderen Seite Botschaften in die dicke Eisschicht kratzt … wer mag das sein? Und was will dieser SLEW von ihnen? Eine witzige, kluge und abenteuerliche Geschichte, die den Spaß an Buchstaben und am Lesen weckt – zum Miträtseln und Staunen, zum Lauschen und Fürchten, zum Aufatmen und Glücklichsein. Jedného krásneho zimného dňa sa Félix rozhodne korčuľovať na ľade, no sám sa nudí, a tak pozve kamarátku Adelku. Kravička má najprv problémy zvládnuť korčuľovanie, no napokon sa kamaráti výborne zabávajú. Až do chvíle, kým si nesadnú na ľad, aby si oddýchli. Niečo pod nimi začne lomoziť. Kto je to, čo chce a prečo má také zvláštne meno: ABYR? Aké tajomstvá sa skrývajú v čiernych hlbinách jazera, kde žijú príšery s obrovskými čeľusťami? Čo hrozí krave a prasiatku? Čo ak majú príšery problémy a potrebujú pomoc? Budú mať naši hrdinovia dosť odvahy a čo zvíťazí? Statočnosť a priateľstvo alebo strach? Nádherný príbeh o úprimnom priateľstve nám dáva lekciu empatie, prečo je súcit a ochota pomáhať druhým taká dôležitá. Odvážni a priateľskí hrdinovia Adelka a Félix naučia deti nebáť sa ľudí, ktorí sú iní, a toho, že naše jazyky môžu byť odlišné. Ich svet je plný snov, objavov a nápadov.
