Dies ist die dramatische Überlebensgeschichte des Hertzka Haft: Der Sohn einer jüdischen Familie wuchs in Polen auf, erlebte als 14-Jähriger den Einmarsch der Deutschen, unter deren Besatzerregime er ums nackte Dasein und um seine jugendlichen Träume kämpfte. Schließlich ins KZ Auschwitz eingeliefert, bildete ihn ein SS-Mann zum Boxer aus, der auf Leben und Tod Schaukämpfe vor den Wachmannschaften absolvieren musste. Haft überlebte unter unvorstellbaren Umständen, schmuggelte in München Zigaretten für US-amerikanische Offiziere, wurde später Profiboxer in den USA, wo er u. a. gegen den legendären Rocky Marciano kämpfte. Erst kürzlich, in hohem Alter, offenbarte sich Haft seinem Sohn. In manchmal verstörender Offenheit schilderte er seine fürchterlichen KZ-Erlebnisse – Brutalität, Erniedrigung, Verrohung –, die ihn für sein restliches Leben traumatisierten.
