Jorge Icaza

    June 10, 1906 – May 26, 1978

Jorge Icaza was an Ecuadorian author whose literary project centered on depicting the dire situation of indigenous Ecuadorians. His works, marked by social critique and raw realism, exposed the oppression these communities faced from landowners, the state, and the church. Icaza explored both their traditional mountain life and their struggles when displaced to cities, where their protests often went unheard. His contributions to the indigenist movement and socially committed literature are fundamental.
