John Lemprière was an English classical scholar, lexicographer, theologian, and headmaster renowned for his "Bibliotheca Classica," or "Classical Dictionary." Published in 1788, this work offered a comprehensive account of proper names mentioned in ancient authors. Though later edited and not always entirely trustworthy, it long served as a readable reference book on mythology and classical history. Lemprière's legacy lies in his effort to make ancient knowledge accessible through a detailed, if sometimes simplified, compilation.
