Českému čtenáři novely přibližují zlomové okamžiky moderních čínských dějin a zároveň mu dávají okusit umění starých vypravěčů s jejich smyslem pro humor a barvité detaily. Lu Wen-fu (1928–2005) a Feng Ťi-cchaj (1942) patří k nejvlivnějším čínským autorům poslední čtvrtiny 20. století.
