August von Kotzebue

    May 3, 1761 – March 23, 1819

August Friedrich Ferdinand von Kotzebue was a German dramatist and writer whose work was burned during the Wartburg festival in 1817. His life was tragically cut short by an assassination in 1819, an event that provided Metternich with the pretext to issue the Carlsbad Decrees. These decrees dissolved student fraternities, suppressed the liberal press, and severely restricted academic freedom within the German Confederation.
