NPCR is a new series of textbooks designed for native English speakers to learn Chinese. It consists of seventy lessons in s'ix volumes, covering beginning to intermediate levels, for three years of instruction. It has been compiled under the guidance of the new NOTCFL Syllabus and in consultation with the HSK Guicleline. The objective of this series is to develop the student's ability to communicate using Chinese through the study of language structure, language function, and related cultural knowledge along with the training of listening, speaking, reading and writing skills.

This compilation of the New Practical Chinese Reader is organized by the China National Office for Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language (NOCFL). The series features a total of 50 lessons, including vocabulary, grammar, drills, and texts grouped around various topics such as courtship, the role of men and women in society, career objectives, traditions of the Spring Festival, the writings of Lu Xun, bargaining for discounts, job interviews, part-time work, family planning in China, visiting a traditional Chinese doctor, and China's launch of the Shenzhou 5 spacecraft. These textbooks are designed to enhance language learning and cultural understanding through engaging content and practical themes.
