Děj knihy se odehrává v americkém New Orleansu, kde má porota v hrdelním procesu rozhodnout o osudu muže obžalovaného z úkladné vraždy. Hledání spravedlnosti je však značně obtížné v porotě tvořené nesourodou skupinou dvanácti různě smýšlejících lidí, jejichž názory na vinu či nevinu obžalovaného se od samého počátku nemálo liší. Porotci jsou nuceni přes názorové rozdíly hledat odpověď nejen na stěžejní otázku viny či neviny, ale i na dilema, zda je spravedlivé odsoudit člověka k hrdelnímu trestu pouze na základě nepřímých důkazů. Jejich nesnadné úsilí dobrat se jednomyslného verdiktu komplikují vzájemné rozepře, osobní antipatie, stupňující se konflikty i další faktory, jež mají s právem či spravedlností jen velmi málo společného. Svou roli sehrají intriky, skryté formy ovlivňování a peníze, zvláště je-li na některé porotce vyvíjen nátlak, prostřednictvím nějž je porota manipulována. Příběh Lanfordovy poroty je i o tom, jakou moc má organizovaný zločin ve městě, v němž se mafie stala pojmem. V takovém prostředí totiž spravedlnost může být opravdu slepá.

Kniha Podrazy po česku je souborem povídek, jejichž literární podoba má reálné základy. Autory knihy jsou úspěšný podnikatel Karel Fišer, známá osobnost z Loukovic na Třebíčsku, a spisovatel Martin Waller, autor knihy Absolutní trest. Devatero příběhů se odehrává ve svébytném světě dravých podnikatelů, zejména éry let devadesátých minulého století. Alfou i omegou života této specifické společenské kasty vždy byly peníze, které, jak známo, kazí charakter a vládnou světu. Kniha se věnuje rovněž různým sociálně-patologickým jevům, jež s fenoménem peněz a úspěchu souvisí: nevěra, alkohol, drogy, divoké večírky, orgie, prostituce, nezvladatelné dluhy a drsné metody jejich vymáhání, nejrůznější podvody (podrazy jsou leitmotivem knihy), úplatkářství, diskutabilní metody nátlaku, vydírání, únosy; nechybí ani činy nejtěžšího kalibru vražda či sebevražda. Jádrem povídek jsou skutečné události, jejichž podobu si však autoři v rámci autorské licence upravili a dotvořili tak, aby co nejvíce vyhovovala jejich záměrům. Některé části textu mají do značné míry takřka autobiografický charakter.

Trest smrti je od nepaměti nejvyšším možným trestem. Zpočátku to byla spíše osobní msta, která se postupně přetavila v trest za přestoupení zákona. Motiv odplaty za spáchaný zločin zcela nevymizel, ale soudce často vedla k vyřčení ortelu i snaha o definitivní vyřazení odsouzence ze společnosti a v neposlední míře i o odstrašení veřejnosti. V evropských křesťanských státech byl trest smrti velmi rozšířený, hojně uplatňovaný, a výkony trestu byly stále brutálnější. Počet hrdelních rozsudků začal klesat v devatenáctém století a k zásadnímu zlomu došlo po druhé světové válce. Dnes je ve většině demokratických zemí trest smrti zrušen, ale například v USA zůstává součástí právního systému v osmatřiceti státech. A právě v kontextu amerického právního systému se odehrávají povídky v této knize. Martin Waller beletristickou formou mapuje problematiku hrdelní spravedlnosti: rozhodování porot a soudů, udělování milosti, pobyt na cele smrti či samotný výkon trestu, který může být proveden pěti různými způsoby. Každá z povídek představuje samostatný příběh člověka, který byl právem či neprávem odsouzen, a každá se dotýká problémů, které existenci absolutního trestu provázejí: možnost justičního omylu, neúspěšný průběh exekuce nebo zkorumpovatelnost právního systému.
