George Birkbeck Hill

    George Birkbeck Hill was an English editor and author renowned for his deep scholarship of the 18th century, particularly as the preeminent commentator on the works of Samuel Johnson. After his education at Oxford, where he formed significant friendships, he began his writing career contributing to literary periodicals. He later served as a headmaster, applying educational theories derived from his family's progressive ideals. Hill eventually returned to writing and reviewing, becoming a regular contributor to a prominent journal and dedicating himself to the study and critique of 18th-century English literature.
