Der Roman wurde, während Dostojewski laufend weitere Kapitel schrieb, als Feuilletonroman in 12 Fortsetzungen in der Monatszeitschrift Russki Westnik veröffentlicht, beginnend Ende Januar 1866 und endend im Dezember 1866.
