Ve Východočínském moři je napadeno šest japonských ponorek, které jsou po incidentu považovány za zničené a ztracené. Celý svět to považuje za nehodu. Čínští komunisté bojují o přežití v nelítostné občanské válce a nyní jim padla do rukou nejen ponorka včetně posádky a komandéra Seana Murphyho, ale také americká moc a prestiž. Americe zbývá vyložit poslední zoufalou kartu: vyslat na misi nejvyspělejší ponorku na světě, stále ještě nevyzkoušenou USS Seawolf, které velí kapitán Michael Pacino. Seawolf má za úkol dostat Tampu z míst, kde ji střeží celá čínská flotila, po zuby vyzbrojená vojenskými technologiemi, které komunisté získali od poražených Rusů.
