Bricks and tiles are two of the most universal building materials. They are employed in repetitive arrangements to give strength to the structure and to cover surfaces, leading to many different kinds of bonds and styles of surface patterning. This book draws attention to these patterns.

In this work, the author has collected together a set of designs from modern patchwork quilts and they are illustrated with full colour photographs. Also included are interesting patterns taken from many Cosmati floors, themselves inspired by Greek, Roman and Byzantine designs.

Traces the history of the maze in all its forms, from the traditional turf mazes of medieval times and hedge mazes such as the one at Hampton Court, to modern mazes in a wide variety of new materials including bricks, mirrors and water jets.

With its concentration on geometrical forms, Islamic design offers a rich source of patterns. Many are taken Moorish Spain and the traditional sites of the Middle East and North Africa, but this book also includes patterns which have been used in mosques in Great Britain.
