Duchovní tradice Blízkého východu poukazují na to, že na každou větu svatých učení je třeba nahlížet alespoň ze tří hledisek: intelektuálního, metaforického a universálního (nebo mystického). Z prvního zvažujeme vnější, doslovný význam, z druhého zkoumáme, jakým způsobem se nám příběh může stát podobenstvím pro náš život nebo život společnosti. Z třetího dospíváme k prožití pravdy, na niž zkoumaná věta Písma míří. Tady musíme jít až za slovní pochopení a obsáhnout i bezeslovnou zkušenost, na kterou živá slova mystiků ukazují. Pro mystika z Blízkého východu, jako byl Ježíš, se tato hlediska navzájem nevylučují. Je proto dobré mít na paměti všechny možné významy posvátných slov modliteb a nechat je na sebe působit. Podle Fabre d’Oliveta spočívá tragédie moderních překladů bible přes řečtinu, jazyk zcela odlišný od hebrejštiny a aramejštiny Ježíšova původního jazyka, v důsledném okleštění mnoha významových rovin jednotlivých výroků pouze na materiální a zcela konkrétní pojmy. Na rozdíl od řečtiny nemá aramejština žádnou ostrou dělící čáru mezi prostředkem a účelem, mezi vnitřní kvalitou a vnějším jednáním. Svévolné hranice mezi „rozumem“, „tělem“ a „duchem“ zde vůbec nejsou přítomny. Nepřirozené vzájemné odloučení Boha, přírody a člověka, neznámé lidem, kteří žili svázáni se zemí, se vplížilo i do našeho jazyka. Ve srovnání s řečtinou a našimi moderními jazyky skýtá aramejština plynoucí a celostní vizi kosmu.
