Práce analyzuje vliv médií na společnost i působení společnosti na masmédia. Analýzy vycházejí z anglického tisku. Teoretická práce z oblasti novinářství podrobně zkoumá, jak a v jakých oblastech média působí na společnost - a zpětně, jak společnost ovlivňuje média. Autor se pokouší o výstižné definice žurnalistiky i společenských determinant, které ovlivňují práci žurnalistů a vydavatelů tisku. Veškeré analýzy a konkrétní příklady, které autor v knize uvádí, jsou z prostředí anglického (případně amerického) tisku, proto je poněkud obtížná aplikace na prostředí českého tisku. Zajímavé jsou i rozbory sovětské totalitní žurnalistiky. Problematice objektivnosti tisku věnuje práce velký prostor. Kniha se zamýšlí i nad vývojem techniky, která má velký vliv na rozvoj nových trendů v oblasti novinářství.
