Then followed the glorious years until 1886, during which eight exhibitions were held to assert the ideas and aims of Impressionism. After this date, the group gradually dispersed; each artist, pursuing his own personal and often solitary research was driven, as Monet described it, by 'the obsession to carry on painting and making progress until the end'. The works are grouped by theme and some are accompanied by a commentary giving particular insight into these artists, who, at the end of the 19th century, rejected the academic style in favor of a subtle play of light. Depuis la naissance du mouvement en 1874, avec l'apparition du mot " impressionnisme " lancé presque au hasard à propos d'un tableau de Monet, l'auteur nous décrit le milieu artistique dont il est issu et la formation des peintres qui le composent. Suivent les années glorieuses, jusqu'à 1886, jalonnées par les huit expositions où s'affirment les enjeux de l'impressionnisme. Le groupe disparaîtra peu à peu, chacun des artistes poursuivant des recherches personnelles, souvent solitaires, avec " cette obsession de peindre toujours et progresser encore, jusqu'à la fin ", comme le dit Monet. Les œuvres sont regroupées par thèmes, certaines d'entre elles étant accompagnées d'un commentaire donnant un éclairage particulier sur les artistes qui, en cette fin du XIXe siècle, refusèrent l'académisme pour jouer subtilement avec la lumière.
