Výbor z povídek Guy de Maupassanta, jednoho z nejslavnějších francouzských spisovatelů 2. poloviny 19. století, vybral, uspořádal a nově přeložil Jiří Žák. Sbírce vévodí Kulička, příběh nevěstky, která svou lidskostí a nefalšovaným vlastenectvím zahanbí licoměrné, sobecké měšťáky, která byla poprvé vydána roku 1880 v souboru Médanské večery. Kulička je autorova novelistická prvotina a francouzský kritik A. Thibaudet o ní výstižně poznamenal, že Maupassant „nenapsal už nikdy nic lepšího jenom proto, že dokonalost se prostě překonat nedá".
