"Die Kapitel 2Sam 15-20 handeln von einer Krisenzeit in der Herrschaft Davids. Das Unheil nimmt seinen Ausgang in der Königsfamilie, zieht aber das ganze Land in Mitleidenschaft. David wird zeitweilig vom Thron gejagt, am Ende droht die Personalunion Juda-Israel zu zerbrechen. David übersteht all dies: teils in wenig überzeugender, teils in bewundernswerter Manier. Am Ende ist er nicht mehr der jederzeit glückhafte, sondern ein schwer gezeichneter Herrscher und Mann, wohl auch ein Tyrann. Die literarische Überlieferung davon setzt schon früh ein. Den Grundstock bildet eine Amnon-Abschalom-Novelle, die möglicherweise von einer im Text genannten Figur verfasst wurde. Sie wurde, zusammen mit einigen Stücken aus dem "Erzählkranz vom Aufstieg und Niedergang der Saulidenz, der Überlieferung vom Aufstand Scheba ben Bichris sowie einer Ministerliste aus dem Hofarchiv Teil des "Höfischen Erzählwerks von den ersten Königen Israelsz, das in der mittleren Königszeit entstand.
