Jeder Versuch zur Lösung eines Konflikts muss sich zu allererst mit dessen Kern auseinandersetzen und dieser Kern findet sich meistens in seiner Geschichte. Eine verfälschte oder manipulierte Geschichte erklärt oft gut, warum ein Konflikt nicht beendet wurde, während eine wahrhaftige, umfassende Betrachtung der Vergangenheit zu einem dauerhaften Frieden und einer bleibenden Lösung beitragen kann. In dieser intellektuellen Autobiografie schildert Ilan Pappe, Professor an der Universität Exeter (England) und Autor des Bandes seinen Weg vom überzeugten Zionisten zum Gegner der israelischen Besatzungspolitik. Pappe stieß mit seiner wissenschaftlichen Arbeit auf heftige Ablehnung in Israel. Nach der Veröffentlichung seines Buches konnte er seine Lehrtätigkeit an der Universität Haifa nicht mehr fortsetzen. Morddrohungen, Denunziationen durch die Boulevardpresse mit der offenen Forderung, ihn „auszuschalten“, veranlassten ihn, Israel zu verlassen. Er verlor seinen Lehrstuhl als Rektor des Instituts für Friedensstudien in Givat Haviva und die Leitung des Emil Touma Instituts in Haifa und übersiedelte nach England. Sein jüngstes, autobiografisches Buch „Wissenschaft als Herrschaftsdienst? Der Kampf um die akademische Freiheit in Israel“ (Original: Out of the Frame: The Struggle for Academic Freedom in Israel, Pluto Press 2010), mit Würde und Humor geschrieben, beleuchtet die israelischen Palästina-Politik und versucht einen Ausblick auf eine friedliche Zukunft.
