This handy little hiking book, which opens up one of the most popular island hiking destinations in the Mediterranean area, has 77 tour recommendations described in detail, generously illustrated by colour photos and colour map excerpts (scale 1:50,000 and 1:75,000). Thoroughly-researched introductory chapters with tips on interesting sights and a bus schedule complete this excellent guide, which no traveller should do without. Thus, this guide remains a reliable companion on all hikes on this diverse island.

Am 14. Juli 1865 erreicht der fünfundzwanzigjährige Engländer Edward Whymper als erster Mensch den Gipfel des Matterhorns. Doch beim Abstieg stürzen vier seiner Begleiter in den Tod, als ein Seil reißt. Kurz darauf gelingt es dem einheimischen Bergführer Jean-Antoine Carrel, von der italienischen Seite aus den Gipfel zu erklimmen. Er gilt als der wahre Held in dieser faszinierenden Geschichte, da er vermutlich als erster die Besteigung des Matterhorns für möglich hielt. Carrel verkörpert das Gegenbild zu dem dandyhaften Whymper: wortkarg, instinktiv und voller Verantwortung für seine Männer bis zu seinem eigenen Tod am Matterhorn, fünfundzwanzig Jahre später. Das Matterhorn bleibt ein Mythos und war 1865 der letzte unbesteigte große Alpengipfel in Europa. Die Frage, warum bei Whympers Erstbesteigung das Seil riss, bewegte damals ganz Europa und beschäftigt auch heute noch. Reinhold Messner lässt sich von dieser Frage nicht los und wird Teil der Seilschaft von 1865. In seiner fesselnden Erzählung von Verantwortung, Vertrauen und Verrat will er nachempfinden, was die Bergsteiger trugen und erlitten. Die Erzählung wird als „hohe Literatur“ und spannend wie ein Krimi bezeichnet.
