Johannes Overbeck was a German archaeologist and art historian with a specialization in Greek mythological art. Though he rarely visited archaeological sites himself, his extensive knowledge and organizational skills allowed him to produce significant works on ancient cities like Pompeii. He is noted for his preference for secondary sources, which lent a dry quality to his writing, yet his greatest contributions were often in his highly attended lectures and his development of the Leipzig collection of plaster casts.
