Chinese porcelain ware is contained in many major art collections worldwide. The Czech Republic also has interesting collections, which, however, have not previously been very well known to the wider public. The boom in the trade of Chinese porcelain is linked to the discovery of the trade routes to China in the 16th century. Porcelain then became a popular artistic item that adorned the residences of the richest aristocrats in other European countries, as well as in our country during the reign of Emperor Rudolf II. Chinese porcelain can be found in a number of Czech castle and palace collections. The largest of these are mainly gathered in the former Waldstein, Schwarzenberg and Lichnowsky dominions. This publication is the result of the research "Chinese Applied Art from the Czech Collections", which aimed to professionally explore collections of Chinese applied art, artistic crafts, vernacular art and ethnography collected in Czech castles, palaces and regional museums.

Through archival albumen prints and illustrations from magazines and books, this publication looks at nineteenth-century depictions of the life and customs of the people of China. The practice of photography, introduced by visiting foreigners, was quickly taken up by local photographers who established their own thriving studios.

Monografie zpracovává téma rozvoje fotografického řemesla v nově vznikajících studiích a ateliérech od 60. let 19. století až do počátku 1. světové války na pozadí rozsáhlých změn japonské tradiční společnosti. Byli to především zahraniční návštěvníci Japonska, kteří si pořizovali ze svých cest fotografickou dokumentaci v renomovaných fotografických salonech, vlastněných jak zahraničními provozovateli, tak stále častěji i japonskými tvůrci, kde se vyráběla obsáhlá honosná alba s obrazy známých míst a také s ustálenými etnografickými typy zachycenými při charakteristických činnostech. Silnější a známější obchodní firmy však pohlcovaly své konkurenty a často rovněž přebíraly jejich archiv fotografických negativů do svých portfolií, což v současnosti výrazně ztěžuje identifikaci autorů jednotlivých záběrů. Mezi těmito tvůrci objevíme řadu umělecky zdatných fotografických mistrů – průkopníků fotografického média v Japonsku, kteří celosvětově proslavili japonskou kolorovanou fotografii, jež ve své době patřila k mistrovským ukázkám japonského smyslu pro koloraci.

Fotografie je hraničním fenoménem, oscilujícím mezi pomíjivým a trvalým, dynamickým a statickým, zjevnými a skrytými aspekty. Tato hranice zahrnuje vědu a magii, informace a věci, pravdu a fikci, umění a průmysl, profesionální a amatérské, soukromé a veřejné, dokument a monument, analogové a digitální, globální a lokální, jednotlivé a obecné, jednotné a množné. Hranice je obtížně uchopitelná, neboť nelze ji jednoznačně vymezit pomocí metodologických či politických kategorií. Zkoumání rozhraní je osobním příběhem, analýzou a zhodnocením vlastní zkušenosti. Texty historiků, kritiků umění, filozofů, sociologů a umělců se v této publikaci zaměřují na rozhraní mezi fotografií a sochou, zkoumají historické a současné vztahy mezi těmito dvěma médii. Diskutují problematiku fotografické reprodukce sochařských děl a vzájemné prolínání obou druhů v umění a kultuře. Tato analýza odhaluje složitosti a nuance, které definují interakci mezi fotografií a sochou, a přispívá k hlubšímu porozumění jejich vzájemným vztahům.
