John Baldwin

John Denison Baldwin was an American politician and popular writer on anthropology. He explored the origins of the Mound Builders, a people then believed to have constructed the famous mounds in the Mississippi and Ohio River Valleys. Baldwin rejected prevailing theories that these people were of European or Semitic descent, arguing instead that the mounds were 'wholly original, wholly American' and 'did not come from the Old World.' However, he did maintain the distinction between these Mound Builders and the American Indians of the time, whom he believed were a separate race originating in Asia.
