Johannes Overbeck was a German archaeologist and art historian known for his deep interest in the mythological art of ancient Greece. Though not a field archaeologist himself, his theoretical work and detailed studies of Pompeii and Herculaneum, often based on second-hand information, laid groundwork for future research. Overbeck's writing style could be dry, but his comprehensive knowledge and careful organization of materials were invaluable. His most significant contributions were through his lectures, which were highly popular and well-attended, shaping a generation of students.
