Willy von Doorselaer erzählt in seinem Kinderroman die Geschichte des elfjährigen Kaspar, der bereits mit vier Jahren lesen konnte. Dies versetzt seine Mutter in Angst, da sie nicht versteht, woher das Kind diese Fähigkeit hat, zumal in ihrem Haushalt nur die Fernsehzeitschrift gelesen wird. Der Kinderarzt beruhigt sie, dass Lesen zwar unheilbar ist, aber nicht tödlich. So widmet sich Kaspar der Bibliothek von Herrn Knudde und leiht wöchentlich sieben Bücher aus, was dazu führt, dass er oft abwesend wirkt. Mit elf Jahren ist Kaspars Leben von der Scheidung seiner Eltern geprägt; sein Vater hat eine neue Frau, und auch seine Mutter verbirgt Geheimnisse, die mit ihrem Chef im Supermarkt zu tun haben. Nach einem gefährlichen Unfall seiner Mutter lernt Kaspar die Freundin seines Vaters besser kennen und erkennt ihre Stärke. Er versucht, die Probleme seiner Mutter im Supermarkt zu klären und bringt seinem unglücklichen Vater den Unterschied zwischen "Müsser" und "Dürfer" bei, was schließlich zu einem Jobwechsel führt. Kaspar ist ein kluger Junge, der versucht, seiner Umgebung zu helfen, um seine fragile Idylle zu bewahren. Am Ende verlässt er seine geliebte Lehrerin und wechselt auf eine weiterführende Schule. Der Stil ist jedoch in der Mitte des Buches uneinheitlich, und die Charakterzeichnung Kaspars verliert an Tiefe. Ein nettes, aber nicht herausragendes Debüt.
