Desiderius Erasmus von Rotterdam

Erasmus of Rotterdam was a leading figure of Renaissance humanism and a Christian scholar who advocated for reforming the Church from within. A master of classical scholarship, he wrote in pure Latin and earned the moniker "Prince of the Humanists." His scholarly work, particularly his new editions of the New Testament, influenced both the Protestant Reformation and the Catholic Counter-Reformation. Erasmus sought a middle path of reform within the Catholic Church, criticizing its abuses while rejecting radical departures, a stance that drew criticism from all sides but cemented his unique position.
