In unserer heutigen Gesellschaft wird wieder öfter von „Engeln“ gesprochen. Worin aber bestehen die Wurzeln solcher Rede? Wie haben sie sich entwickelt? Der vorliegende Band konzentriert sich auf die Untersuchung von wichtigen Quellen zu Engelvorstellungen im altorientalischen, alttestamentlichen, frühjüdischen und -christlichen Bereich. Dabei bilden deuterokanonische Schriften des Alten Testaments einen besonderen Schwerpunkt. Zusätzlich werden bedeutende Weiterentwicklungen im Bereich von Judentum, Christentum oder Islam, in Ikonographie und Frömmigkeitsgeschichte untersucht.
