Zatímco Přítelkyně osamělých srdcí i Den kobylek už vyšly v českém překladu, tyto dvě satirické novely u nás vycházejí poprvé. Nathanael West byl spisovatel, jenž měl dar k psaní téměř dokonalých parodií – trochu méně znalý čtenář by místy mohl jeho příběhy brát vážně. Snový život Balso Snella (1931) je téměř surrealistickým výletem jakéhosi básníka Balso Snella do těla bájného trojského koně, kam vstoupí „branou tajemna“, tj. řitním otvorem, a na své cestě tlustým střevem potkává nejrůznější rádoby literáty, kteří touží po publiku, jímž se nechtěně stává Balso Snell. Majlant (1934) vypráví na hlavu obrácený, v té době v Americe oblíbený pohádkový příběh, jak šikovný a čestný mladík může ke štěstí, vzorné ženě a penězům přijíti. Podtitul tohoto půvabného dílka Rozebrání Lemuela Pitkina napovídá, jak asi Westovo převyprávění vyústí.
