Mário de Andrade

    October 9, 1893 – February 25, 1945

Mário de Andrade was a central figure in Brazilian modernism, credited with shaping modern Brazilian poetry. A true polymath, his work spanned poetry, novels, musicology, and art criticism, and he was instrumental in the influential Week of Modern Art in 1922 that revolutionized Brazilian arts. Andrade's impact as a scholar and essayist, particularly in ethnomusicology, extended far beyond Brazil's borders. He was a driving force in bringing Brazilian art and literature into artistic modernity.
