Gli ineffabili Jerome, Harris e George, dopo le perigliose avventure di Tre uomini in barca, sono di nuovo sulla breccia: li vediamo partire, per ritemprarsi - se si può dir così - dalle gioie familiari, alla volta della Germania guglielmina (1900). Comincia l'idilliaco viaggio, turbato appena da alcune incertezze linguistiche, che danno luogo a penosi equivoci e dai capricci delle biciclette: si sa che, nell'universo di Jerome, gli oggetti sono dotati di un estro maligno e bizzarro, tale da mandare in bestia l'uomo più pacifico. Ne sono testimonianza gli innumerevoli casi capitatiallo zio Podger, archetipo d'ogni inettitudine e d'ogni svagatezza, il cui spirito immortale aleggia anche in questo libro. Le biciclette, loro malgrado, conducono i tre da Berlino a Dresda, alla Foresta Nera, al Reno, attraverso un amabile paesaggio e una fittissima selva di divieti e regolamenti, che soli danno felicità e tranquillità ai tedeschi. Cani tedeschi, uccelli tedeschi, cavalli tedeschi si comportano anch'essi da probi cittadini. Ma in questo mondo ordinato si aprono pure, qua e là, squarci sulfurei come la descrizione del barbaro e cruento rito della Mensur o duello studentesco: Jerome è svagato,sì, ma non tanto. E sopratutto è inglese.
