In questo breve romanzo Werfel descrive l'ingresso in un'agiata famiglia praghese di una giovane, graziosa ragazza, Erna, che dovrà prendersi cura di un adolescente sensibile e inquieto, Hugo. Hugo è rapidamente conquistato dal fascino della giovane donna. La sua duplice infatuazione (per Edna e per i suoi amanti, che egli idealizza e nei quali tende a immedesimarsi) faranno di lui un complice nelle fugaci trame d'amore della ragazza. Presto, comunque, le convenienze verranno ristabilite, il morbido e ordinato mondo borghese in cui Hugo sta crescendo si richiuderà attorno a lui, escludendo per sempre la bella, fresca, vivace e reprensibile Erna.
