Het wordt de lezer duidelijk dat deze gebeurtenis uit twee delen bestaat: twee jongens worden vlak na hun geboorte in het plaatselijke ziekenhuis per ongeluk verwisseld en aan de verkeerde moeders meegegeven. Als de jongens - de verteller en zijn vriend Johannes - zes jaar zijn, worden ze beiden uit hun respectievelijke huis gehaald en teruggebracht naar de 'echte' families. Het tweede deel van het trauma houdt verband met een ander misplaatst kind, een meisje dat zwanger raakt en als gevolg daarvan door haar pleeggezin wordt weggestuurd. Ze bevalt in een plee buiten tijdens een strenge winter, in het bijzijn van de dan nog jonge verteller. Zowel de moeder als de baby sterft, en de baby wordt in kranten gewikkeld en in de rivier gegooid.
